Semantic Scholar: Re-defining Literature Search

Chief Executive Officer of the Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence, Professor at the University of Washington's Computer Science Department

Abstract

Literature took a giant step forward with systems like CiteSeer and Google Scholar, but the explosive growth of scientific publications has resulted in information overload. Searching for the phrase "deep learning" in Google Scholar yields more than 50,000 results, and the top result has more than 3,000 citations. As a result, scientists and researchers are overwhelmed. Semantic Scholar is a new, free academic search engine that aims to address information overload by utilizing machine learning, natural language processing, and machine vision to cut through the clutter and enable researchers to home in on key papers, results, and citations more efficiently. My talk will describe our approach, demonstrate Semantic Scholar, and solicit the audience's feedback on how to improve it.
